UMI

The following are reported sightings, collected from witnesses across Japan. None have been officially verified. In each account, a pattern emerges — Umi doesn't just appear. He arrives exactly when someone needs him.

A ramen shop owner reported a dog sitting at his counter during a typhoon. The dog ate a full bowl of tonkotsu ramen and left exact change on the counter. Before leaving, the dog glanced at the owner's phone — a message from his estranged daughter. The owner called her that night.

"If that dog hadn't been there, I don't think I would've called."

A bus driver on the last route to the mountains said a white dog rode the bus three nights in a row. Always the same seat. Always looking out the window at the snow. On the third night, the driver was going to quit. Umi sat next to him at the terminal for an hour without moving. The driver didn't quit.

"It felt like someone understood."

奈良 — NARA

A shrine maiden found paw prints leading up to the offering box. Inside was a handwritten prayer on a folded piece of paper. The handwriting was shaky, like someone learning to hold a pen for the first time.

I want to find where I belong.

京都 — KYOTO

A convenience store security camera captured 14 seconds of footage showing a dog walking through the sliding doors at 3:47 AM. The dog walked to the magazine rack, appeared to browse, then left. The footage was confiscated by management. A copy was leaked online, then deleted within hours.

A postal worker found a VHS tape in a red mailbox on her route. No address, no stamp. Just a label that read「ウミ」in faded marker. Six seconds of static, then a dog sitting in the snow, looking directly into the camera. Then nothing.

"Those eyes — they were trying to say something."

Multiple reports from Shinsekai district of a dog seen sitting alone in a park at night, perfectly still, facing the Tsutenkaku Tower. One man approached to offer food. The dog looked at him, then looked away — not with disinterest, but with something the man later described as "politeness." He sat down next to Umi anyway. They stayed like that until sunrise. The man said it was the best advice he'd ever received — and nobody said a word.

"It felt like being turned down. But it didn't feel bad."
